To save time, when you make changes to the boundaries with the Pencil or Eraser tool, the boundaries are not reset until you finish using the tool. This means that if you have a number of changes to make on one drawing, you can make them all at once without having to wait after each change for the boundaries to be reset. When you choose another tool, there is a short pause while the program acts on all the changes you have made and resets the boundaries.
However, this also means that you don't have the use of the Undo feature after each stroke of the Pencil or Eraser. All the changes are treated as one action, and if you choose Undo after the boundaries have been reset, all the changes are undone at the same time.
If you want to make a series of changes to the boundaries and still be able to undo each change, you will have to briefly choose another tool after each change. This forces the program to update the boundaries after each change.
